Amazon has announced plans that it will no longer be setting up its HQ2 in Queens after facing a backlash from members of the community. The news has been met with a flood of mixed reactions. Business advocacy and real estate are criticizing the retail giant’s decision to pack up and leave. The decision was a sudden and unexpected announcement by Amazon after a much-publicized search for a second headquarters. The company last November announcement that it would open two new sites — one in Queens, with over 25,000 jobs, and another in Virginia. "After much thought and deliberation, Amazon has decided not to move forward with our plans to further expansion and build a headquarters for Amazon in Long Island City, Queens," Jodi Seth, an Amazon spokeswoman, said in a statement. The statement also noted that "the country’s local politicians and some state government regulators are opposing Amazon’s decision and have made it clear — they oppose Amazon’s presence and will not work with the company. They are not willing to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward with the project that we had envisioned in Long Island City." TechCrunch reported, Mayor Bill de Blasio took Amazon to task for the move in a customary bit of New York saltiness. He said, "You have to be tough and rigid to make it here. We gave Amazon the opportunity to do business and expand in the greatest city in the world. Instead of working with the community, Amazon gives away that opportunity." Moreover, he says New York has the best talent in present with it, and the city is growing every single day. If a company can’t recognize what that’s worth, surely its competitors will.” Carolyn Maloney, a New York congresswoman, on the other hand, said she was "disappointed" with the decision. The country would lose out on 25,000 jobs and "hundreds of millions of dollars in new investments." "The deal could have been improved. There were legitimate concerns raised and aspects that I wanted to be changed. I was ready to work for those changes," her Twitter statement read. "But now, we won't have a chance to do that."
